Some of my favorite cover songs

I've never been a fan of cover bands. While in college, I saw a few and even after a good buzz settled from a pitcher or two from beer, I used to say, "Man, they killed that song." There are a few exceptions. I don't mind when bands take time out to cover some great songs from the past. Here are a few I like. Obviously, if you've read any past entries or via profile, you know one of these bands is one of my all-time favorites.

Funny that you posted the Lennon cover since right now I'm listening to the Beatles 'Yellow Submarine' CD (I bought it for 3 bucks at a pawn shop this afternoon).

Thomas,

Honestly, I never really warmed up to The Beatles. My dad used to listen to them -- Sgt. Peppers album. There's a few tracks I like.

Thanks for offering that discount for Friday's. One of these days, I'll have to make a return there. The food is very good.

I'm with you on the cover tunes thing. But, like yourself, every once in a while I hear a song being covered by a new artist that brings a whole new interpretation to it. Johnny Cash's "Hurt" is an example for me.

PJ Pants,
I like Live's cover of Imagine but I have mixed emotions about that song. I've always loved it but the more I learn, the more jaded I become.

Placebo vs Pixies ... nice! "Where is my mind?" ... I often find myself pondering that very thought! :-P

Dam,
"Johnny Cash's "Hurt" is an example for me."

Have I ever told you I love you? :-P

BUT ... I must admit, I like Trent's version better than Johnny's remake. I just feel Trent's pain, especially when he sings it live.

xo.s to all the boys above :)

Damerung,

I completely agree with you. Johnny Cash's cover is another great example. If I'm not mistaken, this was his last track he cut before his death. There needs to be more old school country artists for me to listen to this genre again.

Stephanie,

I've always loved Ed's voice. He has great range and it's infectious. Their band's lyrics are genuine and heartfelt on humanity. An old friend of mine helped with one of their concerts and said these guys are great guys.

You can't go wrong with Trent's "Hurt." Like most of his lyrics, they're depressing but strike a chord on societal flaws, for the most part. Some of his earlier works reflected on broken relationships which is like what Greg Dulli still does with his work before parting with The Afghan Whigs and on and off with The Twilight Singers.
